Thinking about entering the Mercer Surrey Half? Here’s a bit more information about us and our event!
The award-winning Mercer Surrey Half Marathon is delivered by Toby, Becky and Hollie at aat-events. We’re a friendly bunch whose full-time job is to deliver “fun events for fun people” and we’re pretty good at it.
You’ll be 1 of around 6000 runners. 550 of them are kids! It’s Surrey’s largest half marathon, and one of the only closed-road 5kms around too. £0.4 million is raised for charity each year by our runners.
Why the Mercer Surrey Half?
The atmosphere at the Mercer Surrey Half is one of the things that is repeatedly brought up in our racecheck reviews and something that we pride ourselves on. The Mercer Surrey Half is ultimately your friendly, local half marathon; but as the good word has spread, we’re now attracting a whole bunch of runners from further afield which has really added to the scale and flavour of the event. We’re particularly honoured that fundraising superstar Tony The Fridge travels over 300 miles down from Newcastle each year to enjoy our race.
We’re honoured that our previous participants chose us as The UK’s Best Road Run in the 2016 racecheck awards. This isn’t a sales pitch – we’re just really chuffed to be officially recognised as one of the UK’s top rated events! We’ve got over 100 reviews on racecheck for you to read through, with an average score of 4.6/5. If you’re a Runner’s World or Running Bug user you’ll see similar scores on there too.
How we organise stuff.
We’re affiliated with UKA and runbritain, which offers runners assurance that we organise our races to a certain standard. And that standard is excellent. We hold BARR’s (British Association of Road Running) Gold Award, which is the highest grade they award to race organisers for “outstanding race management and commitment to runners.” We arrange for the roads to be fully closed throughout all the races (half marathon, 5km and kids) so that you can race safe.
There’s loads of perks to hosting our event at Woking Leisure Centre. We offer our runners indoor bag storage and indoor massage, plus changing and showering facilities. There’s even a Costa Coffee. Our runners can use the extra toilet facilities inside in addition to the outdoor “portaloo village”, and if you’re really after a day of exercise, you could even go for a sauna and swim after your run. #dreamy
As for the “post race treats” – we aren’t fans of plastic goody bags. We do our bit to keep Surrey’s beautiful countryside clean and be a responsible, eco-friendly event. But we of course offer our runners plenty of goodies, including discounts to local restaurants and businesses on race day, and free refreshments at the finish line. We’re pretty proud to be renowned for offering a seriously bling medal. We promise that they will always be large (because you’ve earned it!), high quality, and something that you’ll be proud to show off and cherish for years. Finally, we don’t do t-shirts – we like to be different! You’ll get one of our iconic buffs as a finisher of the Mercer Surrey Half. Trust us when we say it’s “the thing” to wear if you’re out running in Surrey – everyone has one!
Finally, we like to offer something for all of your supporters too. We make sure that there’s plenty going on in the event village to keep your family and friends entertained – like dance performances and a live feed of the race on our giant TV screen. Out on the course, there are some beautiful village pubs who kindly offer some great deals on beer and food. There’s live music along the course and in the event village too.
