Organisers of the Mercer Surrey Half Marathon are delighted to welcome the “Sgt Steppers Homeless Hearts Club Band” to the race on 11th March 2018.

The band consists of four Blackwater Valley Runners: Ian, Cyra, Alex and Linda – who will be running the half marathon whilst busking for charity. The quartet will perform at the back of the race pack to motivate the runners who need it most, and provide a spectacular celebration to the end of the race as they cross the finish line.

The quartet sing, play guitar, bang drums and rattle tambourines as they cover hits from “The Beatles” and other popular artists.

Ian explained that his “two passions in life are music and running” so he “combined the two” one morning at parkrun with Cyra. This proved a little more difficult than his initial test on a treadmill, but he decided that it was certainly possible to perform and run simultaneously. In Ian’s own words, he and Cyra invited “two more mad folk” (Alex and Linda) to make up their “Fab Four”.

Alex was part of the Xempo Race Pacing team at the event in 2017, but will be trading his flag for his guitar in 2018. Alex and the rest of the quartet are looking forward to taking part in the Mercer Surrey Half Marathon.

In the meantime, the quartet will take part in a number of other races. They also hope to achieve a Guinness World Record for ‘The Fastest Marathon playing a guitar, or dressed as the Beatles. We wish them the best of luck!
