The 2016 Surrey Half Marathon is set to be a really special race. If you’ve signed up, you’ll be racing through the stunning Surrey countryside alongside 4500 runners, who have all experienced completely different journeys to get to where they’ll be this Sunday. Some of you will be novices to our event, the sport of running and/or the half-marathon distance. Others of you will be seasoned fitness fanatics, and some of you will definitely be will be running as a way of supporting a cause. But what unites you all is that you’ve all done at least some training! Read on to meet some of our 2016 runners…

Team Run Fast will be back this year, and are expected to be amongst the first to cross the finish line. Last year, the Surrey Half Record was smashed by Sammy Nyokaye of team Run Fast. Sammy and (Run Fast) team-mate Peter Limo dominated the race from the outset, sharing the work at the front. It was Sammy who made the push in the final stages, out-sprinting Limo to the tape in a new personal best of 1:02:41. One to watch for this year is Teresiah Omosa, who will be competing in the Surrey Half for her first time this year. Her half marathon PB is an astounding 1:13:48, but when running a course as flat as ours, could she be on for a PB?! Damaris Areba, Barnaba Kipkoech and Josphat Kemei make up the rest of the Run Fast team runners who’ll also be taking on Surrey!

Tony Phoenix-Morrsion, AKA Tony The Fridge will be running this year as part of team Macmillian – who are the Surrey Half Marathon’s National Charity Partner. As his name suggests, Tony will be running the 13.1 mile route with his 93lb Smeg fridge on his back! He runs with it as a tribute to cancer patients, and carries beer and ice-cream inside to support some additional mid-race fundraising! It’s his unique way of fighting the disease which has made him immensely popular on social media and within the running community. Tony has been honoured for his commitment to changing how we fight cancer, and we are very excited to have him on our start line.

Using the Surrey Half as a training run are Health and Fitness bloggers Twice The Health, and Sport/Tech writer Kieran Alger. Twice The Health are two local girls who “use their love of exercise to excuse their love of food” and have planned to run across the Grand Canyon later this year. You won’t miss them as they’re always in matching gear! Kieran will also be using the Surrey Half as a training run for various Ultra-Trail Runs he has planned for later in the year.

Xempo will be back this year to provide a team of experienced race pacers to run with you all. Most of the team are seasoned marathon and ultra distance runners, but they’ve all got very different experiences and stories to tell. What they all have in common though is that they are running the Surrey Half this year for YOU; because they want to help you achieve your own goals – whether that be completing the course in a certain time or just making it round. They’ll be there with you every step of the way and maintaining a constant pace. You can check out our last blog post to find out more about them.

You’ve just read about some of the amazing people who you’ll be sharing your Surrey Half journey with, so please remember to take some time away from monitoring your Garmin to embrace your surroundings. You should feel honoured to be running alongside all our incredible runners who will all be willing you to keep going!

Wishing you all the best of luck,
The Surrey Half Marathon
